Liown Car Dashboard Surge Protection Strategy: Make every ride safer

2024-06-04

In today's automotive industry, with the rapid development of electronic technology, the electronic equipment in vehicles has become increasingly complex and sophisticated. Especially in the design of the instrument panel, high-precision electronic components and power management system have become the key factors to ensure its stable operation. Under such circumstances, the selection of appropriate circuit protection elements is particularly important.

Product overview

The SM8S series is a high-performance transient voltage suppressor (TVS)  of Liown Semiconductor. It is designed to to provide reliable protection for electronic components in automobiles. The SM8S series is packaged in DO-218AB.

 Product advantage

At the moment the car starts or stops, there may be a transient voltage surge in the electrical system. If this surge is not promptly controlled, it may cause damage to the microprocessor or other sensitive components of the dashboard.

The SM8S series, with its highly efficient voltage clamping capability, rapidly absorbs these surges, thus protecting the safe operation of the entire instrument display system.

With extremely low dynamic resistance and fast response time, this series can effectively absorb transient energy up to 6.6KW, thereby protecting the downstream circuit from damage due to voltage surges.

Test standard

The SM8S series meets the ISO 7637-2 test standard and absorbs peak voltages in time and stabilizes them within a safe range. The picture shows the Vc waveform measured by SM8S24CA according to 5A pulse in ISO7637-2 standard.

As can be seen from the figure, SM8S24CA can clamp the pulse voltage at a lower voltage level. The SM8S series has a voltage range from 18V to 58V and is suitable for automotive electrical systems of 12V, 24V and 48V.

Product application

Whether it is an instantaneous increase in voltage when the car starts or when there is a sudden change in load, the SM8S series products can respond quickly and maintain the stability of the output voltage, thus ensuring the normal operation of the dashboard system.

SM8S24CA is utilized at the power port of the instrument panel. And LY23DC24 is commonly used in the CAN bus ESD.

In addition, the SM8S24CA features a compact surface-mount package that is particularly suitable for dashboard designs with limited space. It not only saves valuable circuit board space, but also improves the aesthetics of the overall design. At the same time, the low leakage current feature also helps to optimize the power consumption of the dashboard system and extend the battery life, which is particularly important for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Future outlook

As the automotive industry moves towards greater automation and intelligence, the demand for efficient and reliable circuit protection is growing, and the SM8S series TVS from Liown Semiconductor provides an economical and high-performance solution that is suitable for protecting the instrument panel circuits of smart cockpits.

Choosing Liown Semiconductor is to choose an intelligent and efficient protection strategy to make every driving a safe and pleasant journey.
